We are transforming the unoccupied central and eastern sections of the Southern Maltings to create a vibrant, contemporary and flexible arts space.
The ground floor will have a café and performance spaces and the first floor will house studios, workshops and exhibitions. There will also be a gift shop. The outside area at the eastern end will be transformed to create a garden with seating and a glazed atrium providing a new entrance to the redeveloped building.
The renovation will protect the building’s heritage and preserve original features. We hope to add roof windows to bring more natural light into the upper studio and workshop spaces.
Stage one is to do essential repair works to preserve key parts the listed building. The first part of the building we will bring into use will be the existing function room on the first floor. We will use this for fundraising events and activities and hope to do this by early summer 2017.
As part of the agreement with East Herts Council we have committed to invest at least £150,000 in the building in the first five years in return for low rent – though we estimate it will cost around £500,000 to fully realise our ambitions. We need to raise this money from grants, sponsorship and donations and will be providing details soon about how you can get involved.
